Foreign Currency Exchange at which bank? I'm going to the US soon. Do US banks charge for a fee when you exchange foreign currency to US dollars from them? Where is the cheapest bank/place to get a good exchange rate? Thanks.
Floating and fixed currency exchange rates??? I've never delved too deeply into this so I don't know how it works. Why do some countries have fixed exchange rates and other countries have semi-floating exchange rates? Like the pound sterling is maintained artificially high through the U.K. governments interference and the Chinese yuan is maintained artificially low. Isn't this like a license to steal? Couldn't a government in theory manipulate rates to hoard foreign currency. Why doesn't the WTO or whatever agency regulates this stipulate that everyone has to have a floating currency? Remember, I only looked into this subject casually so I don't know if I'm way of base or not.

I traveled and came back to the US, with a bunch of currency from Trinidad, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. How can I get the best exchange to US Dollars, as close as possible to the going exchange rate? I am exchanging the currency in New York. Also, compared to the listed exchange rates for these currencies, what percentage of the cash can I expect to get back when exchanging? for example, for one of the currencies the rate was approx. 34 units to 1 US$ on a particular day, yet a currency exchange place was offering 41 units to 1 US$. Is this a reasonable difference?

I bank with RBS and was wondering how often they change the exchange rates for foreign currency for banking customers - I'm paid in US$ and convert into £ Sterling - Anyone know how often they review their rates? I know they trade currencies throughout the business day, but the rate they give customers stays pretty stable as they have a big margin built into the customer exchange rate. They also have a different rate for banking customers who are transferring foreign currency into their account, this is the rate I'm looking for Thanks

International Economics: why a nagative slope supply curve for foreign exchange? why a supply curve for foreign exchange can be negative ? Generally, if nominal exchange rate is defined by domestic currency / foreign currency, then we will find a supply curve for foreign exchange to be postive slope. I wonder under what conditions a supply curve for foreign exchange will be negative slope. In what textbook of International Economics, can I find this explanation? Thank you for your reply.
Foreign Currency Exchange? Hi, I am going to India on a holiday. Where do you think I will get better exchange rates? What are some of the places I can do it in Australia? Best way to obtain foreign currency when traveling? I've been told that while traveling overseas the best exchange rate and easiest access to foreign currency is to use an ATM, and that even with bank fees and conversion % ($2 and 3% respectively), it is still the optimal method. My question is, are there any places within the United States online or not, that offer rates similarly to that of foreign ATMs? Most places I have found are anywhere from a 7 - 10% increase on the foreign conversion rate [found on XE], plus shipping fees. Or is it easier to just get money out at an ATM upon arrival and not take any with you? I am also curious as to what markup is typically present at ATMs when compared to XE values. I will be traveling to London and most of Europe, including Switzerland and Czech Republic. So I know that I will need at least 4 currencies. I would just like to minimize fees as much as possible especially since I will be dealing with $2000 to $3000. I'd like to avoid giving banks free money as much as possible! I have a capital one credit card that has 0% on all fees, which I intend to use for most all purchases, and hopefully have access to my online account sometime to pay it all off every week or so. That will likely drive down the amount of money I need to take out a lot, but there are still a lot of places that will not accept Visa that only cash will do. I am not comfortable giving my credit card to restaurants where it will be taken out of my sight when on vacation, so I will still need a fair amount of cash.

Do "Foreign" GOLD COINS have 3 values? Do they have EXCHANGE RATES? Do foreign gold coins (say, Canadian Maple Leafs and other countries gold coins) have 3 values to them? 1) collectors appreciation value and 2) Daily spot/market price of the gold itself and 3) the foreign exchange value. And also, do real gold coins (foreign in this case) fluctuate according to exchange rates (FOREX RATES) . It would seem to me they should have some exchange rate since they could be used as currency if you wanted to. I am not sure. Thanks

Do you think that foreign students should be charged more for tuition than Americans here, in the USA? Here in Texas, and probably every other state in the Union, Community and State Colleges charge two or three different tuition rates, based on residency. In-county (for 3 tiers) residents pay the cheapest rates. In-state residents typically pay a mid-priced tuition (for 3 tiers) or the cheap tuition rate (for 2 tiers). Out-of-state and foreign students pay through the nose! Typically, after 1 year living in state or in county, out-of-state students get to pay the cheaper local rates. However, in most cases, foreign students never get the cheaper rates, regardless of how long they live in the particular state. Typically, the multi-tiered tuition depends on property taxes collected by the college district. Some colleges have dorms, but many foreign students live in apartments or rented houses or with extended relatives where property taxes are paid. Consider also the currency exchange rates and some foreign students are US-sponsored. Is this Fair? Unfair? Discrimination? Many foreign students attending college here, in the USA, are living in apartments or rented houses. The owners of these apartments or rented houses pay property taxes. The tax money comes wholly or in part from the rent collected. Also, some foreign students are sponsored by friends, distant relatives, or organizations here in the USA. Also, foreign students are NOT tax exempt. Foreign students must pay sales tax in the stores, register and inspect their vehicles (for those who buy a vehicle here, even if it is a 15-year-old "cash" junker). Also, banks don't lend student loans to foreigners without an American co-signer. Banks won't let their money just waltz out the door just like that! Again, is it Fair, Unfair, or Discriminatory for Colleges (& Universities) to charge foreigners higher tuition?
Foreign Exchange Artificial Intervention? Can the government of any nation or any global authority manually intervene in the foreign exchange market to change the exchange rate of any 2 or more particular currency pairs? For example if the exchange rate was dropping or rising too much and damaging the economies of coutries, could anyone artificially change it just like that in the interests of global economic stability or the like? And if so when and how recently does/has this happened before?
Foreign currency forward pricing problem? I have been trying to solve this problem and I don't know where to go. A company enters into a forward contract with a bank to sell a foreign currency for K1 at time T1 . The exchange rate at time T1 proves to be S1 > K1 (NOTE, S1 is the spot price at T1). The company asks the bank if it can roll the contract forward until time T2 > T1 rather than settle at time T1 . The bank agrees to a new delivery price, K2 . Explain how K2 should be calculated. I'm thinking there should be a time adjusted difference between K1 and S1 factored into the new price along with the spot price at T1 (S1). K2=(2*S1-K1)*exp^((r-rf)(T2)) I'm not sure what direction to go in after that. Maybe I'm thinking about this too hard, but I feel like I'm missing something.

Foreign Interest Rates and Purchasing power? I have a new trading account in a foreign country (USD converted to their local currency). If the national interest (Short term rates) rate in this foreign country is 10.00% does this mean that each US dollar has a purchasing power of 10.00%? To purchase a product (or security) you could multiply your returns on investment (interest rate + exchange rate) by 10? Every US dollar placed within this country would grow exponentially by 10? Thank you.
I need foreign currency - where can I get the best rate? I'm travelling to Singapore, then Malaysia and then Dubai. What's the best place to get the local currency for each of these places in terms of exchange rate/ commission etc. i.e. am I better off getting money here, or should I get it there? In the US, Is it legal to purchase foreign currency directly from individuals? I'm planning a trip to Europe, and instead of paying the commisions, and accepting the terrible exchange rates banks offer, I was thinking of buying left over currency from people returning from Europe. Is it legal to do so, or do I have to buy my British pounds, etc. through a bank or the "change" bureau at the airport? Thanks.
