Canadian currency....? I was given some currency of Canadian bills. They were left to me by my uncle who passed away. I noticed that these bills are no longer used as they were changed in 2004. Am I allowed to use them or can I go to a bank to give me new ones which have been updated? Thank you kindly for any replies. Cherie
Should I convert my US currency to Canadian dollars? I am planning a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada. From past experience, I know that most merchants accept both US and Canadian currency. When the US dollar was worth more than the Canadian dollar I would always convert my currency. Now that each currency is worth about the same, should I still convert?
How did it come to pass that Canadian coin currency mimics American coin? Excluding uncommon pieces like silver dollars, 50 cent pieces (both of which I'm not sure of for Canadian currency) their money mimics ours. I can't imagine that completely by chance they also chose to use 1, 5, 10, and 25 cent pieces each with the same size, thickness, and color as American currency.

On average how much does stuff cost up there compared to here? Is there stuff thats cheaper up there than would be in U.S.? I'm hoping to get some good seafood at much better prices than here.. I love lobster but costs way too much. Some great answers so far. Yeah I figured lobster was an east coast food. But I know salmon and Alaskan crab are up there no doubt. Maybe I'll finally try some crab legs.
americans: is canadian currency accepted where you live? in northern minnesota i used to see canadian coins all the time. loonies and two-nies and quarters were taken and given as change and legal tender. maybe it's not legal, but it was the norm. here in the south (elizabeth city, NC), i have only seen one canadian coin in the last six months or so... and it was treated like it had the plague. maybe i could sneak in a canadian penny at the seven-eleven for a joke, but would i be arrested? is canadian currency ever seen where you live? (city and state, please, if you like) is it accepted as 'legal'? or are parts of the US close to the canadian border the only places you'll ever see a loonie? currency exchange from us to canadian dollars question? Hi, I will be going to Montreal this winter- I have travelers cheques in US dollars- where would I be able to exchange these (to Canadian currency) for a good rate? Which banks or currency exchange places offer good exchange rates? And if I were to exchange these in a bank, will I have to open an account with the Canadian bank? Or do I just drop by and ask the teller to exchange it? How would I go about to make such exchange? I'm asking a lot of questions (sorry!) but I want to be prepared and make the most of this holiday! Its my first time traveling to Montreal, and help will be very much appreciated! Thanks.

Besides most commercial banks where can I go to exchange foreign currency? Besides most commercial banks where can I go to exchange foreign currency? I traveled to Niagara Falls, Canada in 2005. On the way out of the country I had an impaitent bus driver who would not allow me to stop off at the Duty Free shop to exchange the currency. So I came home with just under $20 in Canadian Currency. I've held onto this money since last year. Every commercial bank I've called require you to be a customer. My credit union doesn't accept foreign currency for deposits. So I feel like I'm stuck with this money I can't use. If I knew someone going to Canada perhaps I could offer to "sell" it to them but in lieu of that I don't what to do with this money.

About the Canadian currency? Right now, the Canadian money is worth about $ 1.08 comparing the value of the American dollar. Do you think the tourist industry will suffer in Canada because of this? I remember some years ago the Canadian dollar was worth only 60 cents american and the snowbirds kept going to Florida just the same! I also remember how some american people did not even want to accept ONE CANADIAN PENNY, as if it was garbage! This was not nice! I don't think Canadian people would do that now! What is your opinion on that?

US dollar currently at 93.5 cents against Canadian currency? While this is a boon to me personally because some of my investments pay in foreign currency and while the drop in the value may actually help place American goods in foreign markets or spur tourism to the US, I think the long term problem will be sliding faith in our ability to repay massive debts. Am I just being a worry-wart here? Is there a bright side I'm not seeing a year or two down the road? I'm astonished that so many are spending time bashing candidates but not questioning what got us to this pass or what to do next.
